DESCRIPTION

This intricate engraving depicts the historical Battle of Hattin in 1187, rendered in a classical medieval woodcut style with elaborate ornamental borders featuring religious and architectural motifs. The composition shows two armies clashing in a dramatic mountainous landscape with twin peaks dominating the center, while a radiant sun shines overhead illuminating the fierce combat below. Armed warriors on horseback and foot soldiers bearing shields and weapons engage in battle across the foreground, with Islamic banners visible on the right side and Christian crosses represented on the left, symbolizing the Crusades-era conflict. The ornate frame includes decorative circular vignettes in the corners depicting fortified castles and cities, while religious symbols—a Latin cross and Arabic calligraphy—appear at the top, emphasizing the religious significance of this encounter. The phrase "FAITH MET FIRE" appears in the banner below the main scene, serving as a thematic caption for this historically charged artistic representation of the famous Saladin victory.
